It also said that hot and humid weather is expected in Konkan and Goa on March 28 and in Rayalaseema, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karaikal, Kerala and Mahe during March 28-31. This geographic phenomenon is associated with increased precipitation over the Horn of Africa and the southern United States and unusually dry and hot conditions over Southeast Asia, Australia, and southern Africa.
Mercury crossed 40 degrees in 9 states in March
According to an analysis of temperature data since 1970, the probability of the mercury rising to 40 degrees Celsius at the end of March has increased manifold due to climate change. Researchers from the US-based ‘Climate Central’ (an independent group of scientists) have analyzed India’s position in the context of global warming trends. During the climate of the early 1970s it was rare to encounter temperatures above 40 °C in late March. At that time, the probability of recording such a high temperature in Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh and Bihar at the end of March was barely more than five percent. But the analysis revealed that now the percentage of probability of temperature reaching 40 degrees Celsius has increased significantly in 9 states – Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, Bihar, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Telangana, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha and Andhra Pradesh. The probability of temperature reaching 40 degrees Celsius in Maharashtra is 14 percent, which is the highest.
