New Delhi: Congress has not been able to get any stay from various judicial bodies in the Income Tax case. Sources told AnyTV that the department has presented detailed and corroborating evidence in the courts. The evidence states that the party received Rs 626 crore in cash between 2013 and 2019. Sources say that the total IT demand from Congress can reach more than Rs 2,500 crore.
Sources said this is a result of income tax raids in April 2019, which showed cash receipts by the Congress from Megha Engineering and a company said to be close to Kamal Nath’s associates. Sources said the total receipt of cash over several years (2013-14 to April 2019) was Rs 626 crore.

Sources told AnyTV that ‘while the cash receipts from Megha Engineering were for contracts awarded, the cash received from Kamal Nath’s associates was from a larger alleged corruption scam run in Madhya Pradesh, involving several senior bureaucrats, ministers, businessmen, etc. Involved collection of bribes from people. These cash receipts have been confirmed through various means, such as documents found during the search, WhatsApp messages and recorded statements. The evidence mentions a specific payment of Rs 20 crore from Kamal Nath’s official residence to the AICC office.
It is known that under Section 13A of the Income Tax Act, the income received by a political party is exempted if several conditions are fulfilled. This includes not accepting any amount more than Rs 2,000 in cash. Sources said, ‘This is in accordance with the provisions of Section 13A which applies to all political parties.’ Sources said the timing of the order was such as the deadline for the assessment was March 31, 2024, and it had to be completed by that date.
