Russia-Ukraine War: India maintained its neutral stand on the Russia-Ukraine situation by staying away from the resolution brought by Russia on the humanitarian crisis in Ukraine. The resolution was not accepted by the UN Security Council, as it had only the support of Russia and China. India, along with 12 other members of the UNSC, distanced itself on that resolution. “The citizens of Ukraine, including humanitarian personnel, women and children, are completely safe,” Russia said in the resolution. Calling for a ceasefire dialogue to enable the safe and rapid evacuation of people.
Let us tell you that no country voted against the resolution, which made no reference to the invasion.
Other members of the Security Council made statements after voting on the resolution. However, India avoided it. On earlier occasions, India had not participated in the voting on resolutions on Russia’s invasion of Ukraine twice in the Security Council and once in the General Assembly.
Russia calls for a solution to the crisis in Ukraine
The United States termed this proposal of Russia as audacious. US Ambassador to the United Nations Linda Thomas Greenfield said, “The United States intends to distance itself from this resolution, as Russia is responsible for the deteriorating humanitarian conditions. It does not care about the lives and dreams of millions of people who are scattered in the war. If you care, stop this war here. Russia is an aggressor and an aggressor. It is engaged in a campaign of cruelty against the people of Ukraine. Russia wants us to pass a resolution like this. which refrains from making them guilty.”
Britain’s ambassador Barbara Woodward said her country would not vote for any resolution in the Security Council or the General Assembly, which does not believe that Russia is not the sole cause of this humanitarian catastrophe.
What did China say?
China, being the sole supporter of Russia’s resolution, said the Security Council should play its role in the humanitarian situation in Ukraine. The People’s Republic of China’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Zhang Jun, pointed to Beijing’s six-point initiative and told Security Council members that the vote in favor was a call for the international community to prioritize the humanitarian situation in Ukraine.
