New Delhi: In view of the scorching heat in most parts of India on Saturday, the Meteorological Department has issued a warning for Sunday. According to India Meteorological Department (IMD), heat wave to severe heat wave conditions prevailed in Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Odisha and Gangetic West Bengal during the day.
IMD said that the second heatwave of this month continues in Odisha, Jharkhand and parts of Gangetic West Bengal. Earlier, the storm scorched parts of Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Gujarat. On Saturday, the maximum temperature at some places was recorded seven to eight degrees above normal.

Baripada and Boudh in Odisha recorded a maximum temperature of 45.2 degrees Celsius, Midnapore and Bankura in West Bengal recorded 44.5 degrees Celsius and 44.6 degrees Celsius respectively. Daltonganj and Jamshedpur in Jharkhand recorded temperatures of 43.6 degrees Celsius and 43.5 degrees Celsius respectively, while Rajnandgaon in Chhattisgarh recorded 43 degrees Celsius.

In which states will there be severe heat?
The regions that are predicted to see more heat days are Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Maharashtra, Vidarbha, Marathwada, Bihar and Jharkhand. In some places heat wave may last for more than 20 days. The extreme heat may put pressure on the power grid and result in water shortages in some parts of India.

La Nina and El Nino effects
Global weather agencies including IMD are also expecting La Nina conditions to develop towards the end of the year. El Nino causes periodic warming of surface waters in the central Pacific Ocean, causing weakening of monsoon winds and drier weather in India. The opposite of El Nino during La Nina causes abundant rainfall during the monsoon season.
Chances of more rain than average
In a mid-April update, the IMD said India will see above normal cumulative rainfall in the 2024 monsoon season, with La Nina conditions expected to be the major factor, expected to set in by August-September.
