The life of a passenger who was drowning in the Ganga was saved due to the wisdom of the employees deployed at Bhimgowda Barrage in Haridwar. A traveler from Haryana along with his companions was taking bath in the Ganga near Lal Kothi. While bathing, his foot slipped and he went floating in the river. Within no time he got stuck in the deep water of Bhimgoda Barrage.
Seeing deep water all around, the traveler’s hands and legs swelled and he started struggling to save his life. There was a strong flow of water from one side and the gates of Bhimgoda Barrage on the other side. Death was certain if one crossed it.
How was life saved?
Seeing the man drowning, the UP Irrigation Department employees on duty at Bhimgoda Barrage showed promptness. He threw the big rope downwards. By holding it the person drowning in water could come out. However, dragging a human being to the height of the barrage was not an easy task. For this, it took six people, who first pulled the drowning person up with the help of a rope. After this, they brought him out by holding his hands and legs. The drowning man came out of the deep water and thanked the staff.
Bhimgoda Barrage is 455 meters wide
Bhimgoda Barrage was built in 1854. However, it was rebuilt in 1983. Its width is 455 meters and it is spread over 23,000 square kilometers. It has 15 slipway gates and seven undersluice gates. The width of each gate is 18 meters. The canal coming out of it is 6450 kilometers long. Through this, 2,023,000 hectares of land is irrigated. From this it can be estimated how big this barrage is and how difficult it is for a common man to survive after drowning in its depths.
