New Delhi, July 13 (IANS)| Badminton World Federation (BWF) has entrusted India to host the prestigious BWF World Championship to be held in 2026. Its official announcement was made on Tuesday. This will be the second time that India will host this premium tournament, which is held every year except the Olympic year. India last hosted the BWF World Championships in 2009 in Hyderabad.
Since then India has hosted various major badminton tournaments including the 2014 Thomas and Uber Cup Finals, Asian Championships besides the annual BWF Super 500 event, Yonex-Sunrise India Open. Badminton Association of India President Himanta Biswa Sarma is confident that hosting the World Championship in 2026 will help Indian badminton take a big step towards becoming a world superpower. Sarma said, “Hosting a tournament of this stature will be a great achievement for Badminton and Badminton Association of India as well as the country.”
Recently also elected as member of BWF Council for the period 2021-24, Sarma further said, “We are grateful to BWF for handing over the hosting of Badminton’s most prestigious and premier tournament to India. I believe that The participation of world class shuttlers in India through this championship will not only create a great opportunity for sports enthusiasts but will also give a new direction to the development of this sport in the country.”
The corona virus epidemic completely banned sports activities in 2020. This also forced the BWF to change its international tournament calendar as well. The sport’s governing body was forced to move the 2021 Sudirman Cup from Suzhou, China, to Vantaa, Finland. Similarly the 2023 Sudirman Cup which was originally allotted to India will now be held in Suzhou, China.
Badminton Association of India (BAI) general secretary Ajay K. Singhania said, “Due to the frequent cancellation of tournaments and the pandemic not being available on stage globally for these, BWF had reached out to us with an alternative proposal. At BAI we realized that it is important for the country as well as badminton. It was a great opportunity for the fraternity.”
India has won 10 World Championship medals so far, with defending champion PV Sindhu on top with one gold, two silver and two bronze medals, while Prakash Padukone won the first medal for India at the 1983 World Championships. Tokyo Olympics-bound B Sai Praneeth ended a 36-year-long wait with a bronze medal at the Men’s Singles World Championships in Basel, Switzerland in 2019.
In addition, 2012 Olympic medalist Saina Nehwal won silver and bronze in 2015 and 2017 editions respectively, while women’s doubles pair of Ashwini Ponnappa and Jwala Gutta won bronze in 2011 in London.
