Every 33 hours in the whole world, one million people are going to the pit of poverty. At this rate at least 26.30 crore people are expected to go below the poverty line this year. Oxfam International has made this claim in its report titled ‘Profiting from pain’ on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum meeting in Davos, Switzerland. The report said that the prices of essential commodities have increased faster than in the previous decades.
The annual meeting of the World Economic Forum is underway in Davos. In its report, Oxfam International said on Monday that a new billionaire emerged every 30 hours in the world during the Corona epidemic. On the contrary, this year now every 33 hours, 10 lakh people will go into the pit of extreme poverty. The World Economic Forum is an international organization of public-private partnership. Its meeting is being held in Davos after more than two years.
According to a report by Oxfam, a new billionaire has emerged every 30 hours during the pandemic. During this, a total of 573 people became new billionaires. The organization said that we fear that this year 26.30 crore people will become victims of extreme poverty at the rate of 10 people every 33 hours. In the first two years of COVID-19, the wealth of billionaires has increased more than in the last 23 years. The total wealth of the world’s billionaires is now equal to 13.9 percent of the global GDP. It was 4.4 percent in 2000, which has increased three times.
Butcher said that the fortunes of billionaires have not increased because they are working hard. Rather, it has increased because due to privatization and monopoly, they have seized a large part of world wealth and are hiding their wealth in ‘tax haven’ countries.
