A new study has claimed that globally all types of pollution are responsible for 9 million deaths in the year 2019 and the number of deaths due to air pollution due to fumes from vehicles and industries after the year 2000. has increased by 55 percent. India and China lead the world in terms of pollution deaths.
In India, 24 lakh people died due to all types of pollution in 2019 and 22 lakh people died due to pollution in China, but both countries also have the world’s largest population. According to the data, out of these 24 lakh deaths, about 16.7 lakh deaths were due to air pollution and more than five lakh deaths due to water pollution. Apart from this, there have also been deaths in the country due to other pollution. The majority (9.8 lakh) of air pollution-related deaths in India were linked to ambient air pollution caused by PM 2.5 particles.
According to a new study published in ‘The Lancet Planetary Health Journal’, the US is the only country among the top 10 countries that are completely dependent on industry in terms of pollution deaths. It is ranked seventh in the world with 1,42,883 pollution-related deaths in 2019, followed by Bangladesh and Ethiopia, respectively.
Tuesday’s pre-pandemic study is actually based on data from the ‘Global Burden of Disease’ and assessment by the ‘Institute for Health Matrix and Evaluation’ based in Seattle. If we look at the death rate per population, then America comes in 31st place from the bottom. Here the death toll due to pollution per 100,000 population is 43.6.
Chad and the Central African Republic ranks highest with about 300 pollution deaths per 100,000 population. More than half of these deaths are caused by contaminated water. Brunei, Qatar and Iceland have the lowest death rates due to pollution, ranging from 15 to 23. The global average of deaths due to pollution is 117 per 100,000 people.
