Violence broke out in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh during the visit of the President, Prime Minister. Violence had erupted in the Beconganj area near Yatimkhana after members of the minority community clashed with the police in the city on Friday (3 June 2022). During a TV debate on this issue, Jamia professor raised the question that action was taken against DU professor Ratan Lal but not BJP’s Nupur Sharma?
During the debate, Professor Junaid Haris of Jamia Millia Islamia University said that the government should also keep in mind that action is taken against Professor Ratan Lal of Delhi University but not on Nupur Sharma of Bharatiya Janata Party leader. The professor said, “His whole approach is like this. Why does the government not take action against those who say something against a particular religion?
Why no action against Nupur Sharma: Professor Junaid Haris further said, “Those who are rioters should be punished, but how can we forgive those who give water to its roots, those who encourage it?” He said that we have no objection to the action against Ratna Lal, but why was no action taken against Nupur Sharma? Against him, people were gathering in Kanpur.
The rioters should be punished: During this, the anchor raised the question that when the police administration was fully prepared, how did people reach the carts carrying stones? In response, Professor Junaid Haris said that action should be taken against whoever harms the peace and tranquility of the society. Be it those who broke the Babri Masjid, rioters, be it Hindu or Muslim.
On the other hand, BJP has suspended Nupur Sharma and Naveen Jindal from the primary membership of the party. After the violence in Kanpur, BJP on Sunday said that it respects all religions. Trying to quell the ongoing controversy over controversial remarks of BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma, BJP said that it strongly condemns the insult of any religious personality. Actually, Nupur Sharma is accused of making controversial remarks against Prophet Mohammad.
