Amidst the border dispute in India China, a report has claimed that hackers sponsored by the Chinese government have targeted the power grid near Ladakh by cyber attack. Let us tell you that this claim has been made by the intelligence firm Recorded Future Inc. in a report published on Wednesday. Recorded Future says that Chinese hackers did this as part of a cyber espionage campaign.
According to the report, at least seven load dispatch centers in India were targeted through this. These centers conduct real-time operations for grid control and power communication in areas near the disputed India-China border in Ladakh. One of these load dispatch centers was also targeted by another hacker group RedEcho.
“The prolonged targeting of Indian power grid assets by hacker groups linked to the Chinese state offers limited economic espionage or conventional intelligence gathering opportunities,” the Recorded Future report claimed. According to the report, its purpose is to strengthen the former position by collecting information related to future activities.
The claim states that such attacks took place between August and March last year. The report said that its motive was possible to collect information around critical infrastructure by targeting Indian load dispatch centers. Or it is possible to gather information about what plans are being made in the future. Explain that through this data was sent to Chinese state-sponsored command and control servers spread around the world.
Recorded Future claims that a malware software named Shadowpad was used by the hacking group named TAG-38. Which was previously used by the People’s Liberation Army of China and the Ministry of State Security.
Jonathan Kondra, a senior manager at Recorded Future, said the way the attackers were using equipment, cameras and the Internet to infiltrate was unusual. He said the equipment used to launch the infiltration was located in South Korea and Taiwan.
