On July 14, the first case of monkeypox has been confirmed in the country. A person from Kerala has been infected with this virus who has returned from the United Arab Emirates. The report of this person has come positive. After which it has been admitted to a hospital in Thiruvananthapuram, the capital of Kerala. Symptoms of monkeypox virus were seen in the infected person. The patient’s sample was taken and sent to the National Institute of Virology, Pune for testing.
Kerala Health Minister Veena George said that a person who had returned from UAE three days ago and came in contact with another infected person from there. The minister said the samples of the person tested at the National Institute of Virology in Pune confirmed monkeypox on Thursday. He explained that monkeypox is a viral zoonotic disease with symptoms similar to smallpox. In 1958, these symptoms were first observed in monkeys in the form of smallpox-like disease, after which it was named ‘monkeypox’.
Kerala Administration Alert
Kerala administration is on alert mode since first case of monkeypox in Kerala The Union Health Ministry has ordered deployment of a multi-disciplinary central team to test the virus and help the Kerala government in implementing necessary health measures. Kerala Health Minister Veena George said that this person had come to Kerala on 12th, all steps are being taken as per the guidelines issued by WHO and ICMR at Trivandrum Airport.
11 people who came in contact with the infected person were identified
The Health Minister of Kerala said, ‘The people who came in contact with the person from Kerala who has been found to be monkeypox positive have been identified. 11 people had come in contact with him, although the condition of the patient is stable now. All his organs are normal and working. The primary contacts of the people who came in contact have been identified. He said that there is nothing to panic about it. All steps are being taken and the condition of the patient is stable.
