The infighting in the party has intensified after the Congress party’s crushing defeat in five states. The leaders of the G-23 group held two meetings and also issued a joint statement. After the meeting of the G-23 leaders, the party suffered a lot. However, now Sonia Gandhi has come forward to do damage control. On Friday, he had a meeting with senior party leader and important member of G-23 group Ghulam Nabi Azad for about one hour.
After coming out of the meeting, Ghulam Nabi Azad told the media that, “It was already decided in the working committee that she (Sonia Gandhi) should continue as the president, that is not the problem. No one said that Mrs. Gandhi should step down now. Let me tell you very clearly, we took this decision in the working committee.”
This was the second meeting between the Gandhi family and the G-23 leadership. On Thursday, Rahul Gandhi met former Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda. The party leadership has started talks with G-23 leaders earlier this week, in which Sonia spoke to Ghulam Nabi Azad over the phone.
When asked about meeting Sonia Gandhi, Ghulam Nabi Azad said, “Mrs. Gandhi keeps meeting leaders to discuss the organisation. how to strengthen congress party Wherever we have lost, what are the reasons for our defeat? The discussion was also about how to prepare for the upcoming assembly elections together. How to unite Congress to take on its opponents? There are national parties at some places, regional parties at some places, how to strengthen the Congress to meet those challenges?”
Let us tell you that earlier this week senior Congress leader Kapil Sibal gave an interview to The Indian Express, in which he said that now the Gandhi family should step back to take the party forward. On this statement of Kapil Sibal, many Congress leaders had targeted him.
