The UP government had ordered the owners of shops on the route of the Kanwar Yatra to write their names. There was a lot of uproar over this order of the government. TMC MP Mahua Moitra had also filed a petition against it. The Supreme Court, while hearing this petition, has put an interim stay on the government’s decision. All political parties have reacted to this decision of the Supreme Court. Mahua Moitra said that she is very happy with the court’s decision. At the same time, BJP leader Dinesh Sharma said that people should not have any objection in revealing their identity.

While hearing the petition of Mahua Moitra, the Supreme Court said that do Kanwariyas expect that their food is being prepared by a particular category of owners or people? The bench said, ‘We deem it appropriate to put an interim stay on the government’s order. Restaurants, hotels or food vendors are required to display a list of the variety of food they serve, but they should not be forced to display the names of the owners or the employees working there.’

Statement of Mahua Moitra

Mahua Moitra said “I am glad that we filed the petition yesterday and the matter came up in the Supreme Court today. This is a completely unconstitutional order against the basic principles of our Constitution. This order is injunctive and there is no requirement to display the identity and name of owners and employees. Only vegetarian/non-vegetarian signs are to be displayed in shops.”

Statement of Dinesh Sharma

On the Supreme Court’s decision on the issue of installing nameplates on the Kanwar Yatra route, BJP MP and former UP Deputy Chief Minister Dinesh Sharma said, “There is no objection to the Supreme Court’s decision, whatever decision the Supreme Court gives will be accepted. But this is a normal process, people should not have any objection to revealing their identity. When we pass competitive exams and become IAS officers, we write IAS with our names. When we become doctors, we write Doctor with our names. Anyway, 40-50 percent of people write their names in shops. I think people should not have any objection to this. But we accept the Supreme Court’s decision. The government’s priority is that the Kanwar Yatra runs smoothly, miscreants should not harm its sanctity.”

Statement of Saurabh Bhardwaj

Saurabh Bhardwaj said, “Indian names hide the caste of a person. This evil practice of untouchability and discrimination against certain castes has always existed in Indian society. This order has in a way created the ground for discrimination on the basis of caste and religion. The government should stay away from such things. We welcome the interim stay imposed by the Supreme Court.”

Statement by Sanjay Singh

“This was an unconstitutional order. This decision of the Supreme Court is a good decision in favour of Indian democracy. The intention behind this order was to create social divisions among Dalits, OBCs, SC/STs and minorities.”
