For the last 50 years, 73 kg of silver has been kept in the Bijnor Treasury of UP as a guarantee of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. According to today’s time, the price of 73 kg of silver is around 34 lakhs. At the same time, due to its connection with Indira Gandhi, no claim has been made by the Gandhi family about it.
Connection with Indira Gandhi: In fact, in 1972, about two years before the commencement of the Kalagarh Dam, former PM Indira Gandhi had gone on a tour of Bijnor district. During this, the people of Bijnor had weighed him with silver. Silver was about 64 kg. Apart from this, the people there had presented him with some other things as a gift. Due to which silver increased to 73 kg.
Please tell that Indira Gandhi refused to take these gifts with her. In such a situation, it is safe in the treasury of Bijnor for the last 50 years as a surety. Several letters were also written on behalf of the Treasury officials to return the silver but no response was received from them.
While no claim has been made on behalf of the Gandhi family, the Reserve Bank of India has also refused to take it, saying it is private property. At the same time, the treasury officials are talking of giving it only to the family members of Indira Gandhi.
However, according to the rules of the treasury, no personal property can be kept in the treasury for more than one year. But this silver has been kept in the Bijnor treasury for the last fifty years. To keep this silver, it is renewed every year. In such a situation, there is a doubt that such amount of silver is claimed by the Gandhi family or whether it will be kept in the district treasury as a surety.
Senior treasury officer Suraj Kumar says that this silver has been kept in the double lock of the treasury. In this regard, guidance was also sought from the government as to what should be done about it. But no one has claimed it till date.
