In fact, he had a one-year contract with Japan. His contract was being extended, but he was offered a four-year straight contract here, which he accepted. After the departure of 2012 Olympic silver medalist Mathias Bo from Denmark after the Tokyo Olympics, speculations were rife about him occupying the vacant position and the Badminton Association of India was awaiting the ministry’s nod.
In his first stint, Tan played a key role in the growth of Indian doubles players Chirag Shetty and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy. Both the players won team gold medals in addition to individual silver medals in the 2018 Commonwealth Games under his guidance. Satwik and Chirag say that despite their initial reluctance, it was Tan who made them pair up with Chirag. They were both unwilling to play on the front court, but Tan held the pair together. Their coming will be of great benefit.
Shetty is currently ranked eighth in men’s doubles with Satwiksairaj. He said, “Satwik and I are very happy because Tan Koch will be with us again. He made us partner while we were a little hesitant. He helped us reach where we are. We are thankful to the Badminton Association of India and the Sports Ministry for bringing them back.
This year is very important for Indian badminton players as there are big tournaments like Commonwealth Games and Asian Games to be held, besides the World Championships.
