India had earlier hoped that its position in the Ukraine war would not be like that of Afghanistan. There is also no anti-India mentality in Russia and Ukraine. That is why, despite the beginning of the war, India was a little relaxed in the face of the concerns raised after the Taliban’s occupation of Afghanistan. India hoped that its civilians would not become targets in this war. However, the death of medical student Naveen on Tuesday dashed India’s hopes.
According to government sources, Russia was confident that Ukraine would lay down its arms on the second or third day of the war. Due to this not being so, Russia attacked with full force on other important cities including Kyiv, the capital of Ukraine. In order to force Ukraine to lay down its arms, Russia is intensifying its attack and also raising the bar of nuclear war.
What is India’s problem
There are many reasons for India’s troubles. In fact, a large number of citizens are stranded in those important cities including Kyiv, from where it is not easy for India to evacuate its citizens. The trouble is that Indians living in important cities like Kyiv are unable to find a way to reach the border of the neighboring country. All civilians are badly surrounded due to the suspension of traffic services in these war-oriented areas.
Why Indian students could not leave
Government sources said India was aware of the magnitude of the situation. Due to this, the Indian government issued several advisories asking its citizens to leave Ukraine. According to a senior official, most of the medical students there are from middle and lower middle class. These families had sent their children for medical studies by investing all their deposits. Despite the war, Ukraine did not assure these students of online studies and exams, so these students remained stuck in Ukraine for fear of future and career. According to the said official, there were 20,000 Indian citizens in Ukraine. Of these, 15,000 were medical students. After the embassy’s warning, leaving the students, five thousand returned to India before the start of the civil war or on the first day of the war. However, the medical students did not return.
MP should give information of students to the Ministry of External Affairs: Jaishankar
External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar asked the MPs to directly report the information of Indian students and citizens stranded in Ukraine to his office so that their return can be ensured. After Russia’s attack on Ukraine, many MPs are getting phone calls from the families of Indian nationals trapped there. The External Affairs Minister on Monday shared e-mail IDs and WhatsApp numbers with Parliaments on which they can send details.
The worsening condition of Kyiv raised India’s concern, the President postponed the visit
The situation worsening due to Russia’s attack on Ukraine’s capital Kyiv has increased India’s concern. The Indian Embassy has issued a strict advisory to its citizens to leave Kyiv immediately and under any circumstances, amid fears of a further major attack by the Russian army. The embassy has said that Indian citizens should leave Kyiv on Tuesday with the help of whatever means are available. President Ram Nath Kovind has postponed his foreign trip due to Ukraine crisis.
