The biggest bid has been made so far for the media rights of the world’s biggest cricket league IPL. A total of Rs 44,075 crore has been bid for the telecast on TV and digital. The bidding was done through e-auction on Monday and the rights to broadcast a total of 410 IPL matches for the coming 5 years were sold.
Separate bidding for TV and digital: Bidding has been done by two different companies for broadcasting the information received so far on TV and digital. The media rights for broadcast on TV has been sold for Rs 23,575 crore while the media rights for broadcast on digital has been sold for Rs 20,500 crore.
Four packages (A, B, C, D) were put up for auction of media rights of IPL by BCCI. Package A was for match telecast in the Indian subcontinent while Package B was for match telecast on digital in the Indian subcontinent. Package C was for the broadcast of 18 games. At the same time, Package D was for TV and digital broadcast of all sports abroad.
107 crores per match: For every match of IPL, BCCI has received Rs 50 crores for digital broadcast and Rs 57.5 crores for telecast on TV. The base price for broadcast on TV was kept at Rs 49 crore while for broadcast on digital the price was kept at Rs 33 crore.
According to the news of Times of India, the rights of digital broadcast of IPL have been bought by Viacom18. However, no official announcement has been made about it yet.
2.5X Value Added: A bid of Rs 16,347 crore was made by Star India for the media rights of the IPL for the period 2017-22. Earlier in the beginning of the IPL, in 2008, it was acquired by Sony Picture Network for Rs 8,200 crore for 10 years.
