Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) will announce the name of the new captain of the team on March 12. The franchise gave this information on Monday (March 7). South Africa’s Faf du Plessis can replace former captain Virat Kohli as the new captain of the team. Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell was earlier the front runner for the position, but Duplessis’s experience seems to be weighing him down.
Kohli had decided to step down from the captaincy just before the second phase of the IPL last year. He led the team to the playoffs. The team had to face defeat in the Eliminator. Under Kohli’s captaincy, RCB’s team reached the final of 2016, but they had to face defeat against Sunrisers Hyderabad. That was the best performance of the team under Virat’s leadership.
RCB can present Du Plessis as captain in the press conference on March 12 at 4 pm. Earlier it was said that RCB will announce the name of the new captain on March 8 (Tuesday), but the franchise has extended the date. RCB’s new jersey will also be launched on March 12 itself.
Why did Maxwell lag behind in the race for captain?
Glenn Maxwell will not play in the first three matches of IPL 2022. Despite not being named in the white-ball series against Pakistan, Maxwell will miss the opening three matches of the IPL as Cricket Australia has barred all centrally contracted players from playing in the IPL till April 5.
On the other hand, former South Africa captain Duplessis has the experience of leading the team in all three formats including the World Cup. Du Plessis used to play as an opener in Chennai Super Kings. He can also play in RCB’s playing XI as an opener. Apart from this, he is the most experienced player in the team after Virat. He has also retired from international cricket. In this way, you will be able to give more time to the team.
