The 15th season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) is to begin in the last week of March. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the IPL Governing Council have not announced it officially. With the arrival of two new franchises, the process of retaining players, selecting them from draft and auction has been completed. Now everyone is waiting for the schedule of the tournament. At the same time, the Punjab Kings and Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) franchises are also going to announce the new captain. Apart from this, the decision regarding IPL media rights is also going to be taken soon.
1. When and where will the 15th season of IPL take place?
There is just one month left for the IPL to start. BCCI has been busy for a few days in finalizing the schedule. There may be some big announcements soon. The BCCI is currently working on a plan that it has to start the tournament from March 27 at any cost. However, there have also been some reports that IPL broadcaster Star Sports is looking to inaugurate the tournament on March 26 itself.
A BCCI official has told a sports website that the board will take a final decision on this soon. The schedule will be released by next week. As far as grounds are concerned, matches can be held in Mumbai, Pune along with Ahmedabad and Kolkata. Reliance’s Jio Stadium along with Pune’s MCA Stadium and Mumbai’s Brabourne, Wankhede and DY Patil Stadiums may be handed over to host the league stage. The playoff matches are likely to be held in Ahmedabad and Kolkata.
2. Who will be the captain of Punjab Kings and Royal Challengers Bangalore?
Eight teams of IPL are contemplating to set up camp before the tournament. It is believed that like every year, the team of Chennai Super Kings can stay in Surat for the first and most days for practice. However, there is no official confirmation of this yet.
On the other hand, two teams Punjab Kings and Royal Challengers Bangalore are yet to choose their captain. Former Punjab captain KL Rahul will be seen leading the new franchise Lucknow Super Giants. At the same time, former RCB captain Virat Kohli left his post after last season. It is believed that the Punjab team can make Mayank Agarwal or Shikhar Dhawan and RCB can make Faf du Plessis or Glenn Maxwell the captain.
3. BCCI to float tender for IPL media rights
BCCI is soon going to float tender for IPL media rights. This time apart from Disney Star Network, Sony, Reliance Industries and e-commerce giant Amazon are in the race. The BCCI had received Rs 16,347.50 crore from the media rights of the IPL for five years from 2018 to 2022. This time it is believed that from 2023 to 2027, media rights can get 50 thousand crore rupees.
