Sonia Mishra/Chamoli. Many types of trees, plants and herbs are found in India, which not only have importance in Ayurveda, they are also considered important in religious ethics. One of these plants is Timur, which is also known as ‘Pahari Neem’. It is especially found in the hilly districts of Uttarakhand, which includes Chamoli. Not only the leaves but also the branches, seeds and fruits of this plant are all beneficial. This is the reason why villagers have been using it for centuries.
VP Bhatt, Professor of Botany Department at Karnaprayag College in Chamoli district, tells that the botanical name of Timur plant is Xanthoxylum Armatum. Due to having many medicinal properties, it is used in the treatment of minor and major diseases. Pro. Bhatt told Local18 that it is used as a medicine for strengthening teeth and also for treating blood pressure and sugar problems.
Timur is also important religiously
SS Rana, a pharmacist posted in the Ayurvedic hospital of Rudraprayag district and an expert on local subjects, says that Timur, besides being full of medicinal properties, also has religious significance. There are beliefs related to this that keeping it at the threshold of the house does not affect the negative powers. The house does not suffer from evil eyes. At the time of Yajnopavit Sanskar (Janeu), this Timur stick is given in the hand of Batuk. Besides, its wood is considered very sacred, hence Timur wood is also seen near sages and saints.
