Bengaluru, July 13 (IANS)| Indian men’s hockey team defender Amit Rohidas on Tuesday said it took him 12 years to fulfill his dream of being a part of the Olympic team. The 28-year-old defender, who has played 97 matches for India, said that he is grateful to every coach who helped him become a better player.Rohidas said, “It took me 12 years to get here and I am very happy to be a part of the Olympic team. My biggest dream has now come true. I am grateful to every coach who helped me make me a better hockey player. My only aim is to have a successful campaign in Tokyo.” He said, “Dilip Tirkey has inspired every person in my village who is interested in hockey. Where I come from, hockey is not only a sports discipline but also a vehicle of socio-economic development.”
Rohidas made his debut in the 2013 Sultan Azlan Shah Cup in Malaysia. He was part of the team that won the silver medal in the 2013 Asia Cup. Rohidas said, “I was selected for the Under-18 Asia Cup where I got the Best Player of the Tournament award for scoring seven goals. After that my senior team I got promoted. Shortly after that I became the vice-captain for the FIH Junior World Cup in Delhi where we didn’t perform well and I thought it was all over for me.”
