Jaipu. Jagdeep Singh, an Indo-English poet from Jaipur, was recently invited to Raipur to interact with budding poets and literary lovers whose first collection of poems, ‘My Epitaph’, was published last year. Invited under the aegis of ‘The Right Circle’, this interactive program was organized by Ehsaas Viman from Raipur. During this, the poet discussed with Srishti Trivedi, a lawyer by profession and an active member of Ehsaas Viman.
In a very interactive session, Jagdeep elaborates on his poem ‘How to Withstand Pain’ saying that each one of us has to bear our cross and face our share of suffering. And we should do this with all dignity. He said that contemporary as well as modern poets have used allusion, strong images and symbols which makes their poems somewhat ambiguous. However, if the reader makes an effort to understand the allusions and contexts – the meaning of the poem becomes more and it is easier to understand. He invited young poets who were trying to write poems by T.S. Eliot, Sylvia Plath, Dylan Thomas, etc. advised to read more. The more they read established poets, the more they would be able to develop their own style of writing poetry. He asked to understand the nuances of life, which would help him in writing his poems. He also told them that each poem should be revised at least 100 times and not a single word should be unnecessary in the poem.
Responding to a question, he said that poems are now written in free-verse – meaning they do not rhyme or follow pentameter. However, they are required to follow the rhythm and the literary device.
He thanked the organizing committee of Ehsaas Viman Raipur – Srishti Trivedi, Aanchal Garcha, Kalpana Choudhary and Kirti Kirdutt for organizing the poetry programme.
