Bansgaon Lok Sabha seat has been formed by combining three assembly seats of Gorakhpur district and two assembly seats of Deoria district. This seat is reserved for Scheduled Caste. After independence, Congress remained dominant here for many elections. In 1957 and 1962, Mahadev Prasad of Congress had won the elections from Bansgaon Lok Sabha seat. In 1967, Molhu Prasad won as a candidate of the United Socialist Party.
A different style of election campaign in Bansgaon Lok Sabha seat was shown by Molhu Prasad in 1967, who used to ride a bicycle, go out in the area playing Khajri, singing songs and meeting people. He was elected MP. Ram Murat Prasad of Congress won from here in 1971, while in the elections held after the Emergency in 1977, Bharatiya Lok Dal candidate Visharad Firangi Prasad was victorious.
Mahavir Prasad, one of the big leaders of Congress, was elected MP from here four times. He became MP from here in 1980, 84 and 1989. Then in 2004, he won on Congress ticket and was a minister in the Congress government. Also became the Governor of Haryana.
Bharatiya Janata Party was successful in blooming lotus here for the first time in 1991 and Rajnarayan Paswan emerged victorious. Subhavati Paswan was elected MP in 1996 on SP ticket. In the elections of 1998 and 1999, Raj Narayan Pasi once again won the elections as a BJP candidate. In 2004, Mahavir Prasad of Congress was victorious and in 2009, BJP once again captured this seat. Kamlesh Paswan has been continuously winning from here since then. By winning the elections of 2014 and 2019, Kamlesh has scored a hat-trick of victories and once again he has entered the electoral fray as a BJP candidate.
When Modi wave was going on in the country, in the 2014 elections, Kamlesh Paswan got a total of 4,17,959 votes, while BSP candidate Sadal Prasad got 2,28,483 votes. Samajwadi Party’s Gorakh Prasad Paswan could get only 1,33,675 votes. In the 2019 elections, Kamlesh Paswan was successful in defeating BSP’s Sadal Prasad by 1,53,468 votes. Kamlesh got 5.46 lakh votes while Sadal got 3.93 lakh votes. The Congress nomination itself was rejected.
There are a total of five assembly seats in Bansgaon Lok Sabha constituency and all of them have Bharatiya Janata Party MLAs. The border of Bansgaon seat falls in two districts – Rudrapur of Deoria and Barhaj seat is also a part of this parliamentary seat. Whereas Bansgaon, Chillupar and Chaurichaura seats of Gorakhpur district are part of this parliamentary seat.
Talking about caste equation, most of the voters in Bansgaon Lok Sabha constituency are from OBC category. According to an estimate, their number is around 8.34 lakh. 2.5 lakh voters belong to Scheduled Caste. The number of upper caste voters is also around 5 lakh and there are 1.5 lakh Muslim voters. Paswan caste people are very strong among the Scheduled Castes.
Political analyst Prof. Ajay Shukla says that the 2024 elections are being fought on the face of PM Modi and not the candidate. Therefore it does not matter who will be victorious. Bansgaon seat has been dominated by BJP since Ramlahar. Current Congress candidate Sadal Prasad can give competition here but BJP will have the upper hand.
Senior journalist TP Shahi says that the people of Bansgaon are angry with the current MP. There are reports of his opposition at many places, yet Kamlesh Paswan will have the upper hand on this seat. They will get votes in the name of Modi and Yogi. Even in the strong alliance of SP-BSP in 2019, when this seat went to BJP’s account, this time the alliance does not seem to have that much strength.
kamlesh paswan

Kamlesh’s father Omprakash Paswan has also been a well-known leader in his field. But in 1996, he was murdered while addressing a public meeting.
