Nairobi. Kenya will destroy 840,000 doses of the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine, which expires on February 28. A top official of the Health Ministry has given this information.
The vaccines are part of the 2.2 million doses received as donations through the Covax facility in January and were distributed across the country, Xinhua news agency quoted the ministry’s cabinet secretary, Mutahi Kagwe.
Kagwe attributed the expiry to complacency among Kenyans and growing hesitation of the vaccine.
“AstraZeneca in particular has unique challenges. Kenyans have been complacent in taking the jab following a reduction in positivity rates and COVID-19 admissions. Daily vaccination rates have dropped from 252,000 recorded in early February to 30,000-40,000 daily,” he said. Has been.”
He further noted that the preference for certain types of vaccines by Kenyans has led to a reduction in the administration of AstraZeneca jabs.
“We continue to see vaccine hesitation especially because of misinformation and rumors about fertility issues.”
Across Africa, vaccine expirations have also been reported in Uganda, Malawi, Senegal and Nigeria.
According to Kagway, Kenya has so far received around 27 million vaccine doses of the AstraZeneca, Moderna, Pfizer, Sinopharm and Johnson & Johnson brands and administered 17.4 million of them.
Eight million people have been fully vaccinated.
