After the Taliban captured Afghanistan, an operation to bring back the citizens of India was carried out. bringing back 150 citizens ITBP Commandant Ravikant Gautam narrated the struggle journey of the entire operation. In which he also mentioned how he faced Taliban fighters and how the two parties had come face to face a time ago. Let us know in his words only what happened in Taliban.
Ravi said, the Indian Embassy was celebrating Independence Day on August 15 at 9 am when an explosion was heard. The Taliban were only 50 meters away from us. We knew they were going to Kabul. Our 2 aircraft were at Kabul airbase. We safely escorted the first contingent of 46 people from the embassy to the airport, but for the second contingent, we had to pick up Indians from different parts of the city. The second team consisted of me, the ambassador, 99 commandos, 3 women and embassy staff. We left for the airport on the evening of 15th August, but could not reach.
An atmosphere of scuffle also ensued with an armed group at a checkpoint. They fired in the air, also took out rocket launchers. It seemed that today we will be martyred or will reach the airbase. But after a while the situation changed, we also lowered our arms. We didn’t have to fight, we had to bring our people together. Had there been a fight, there could have been loss of life and property. Then we went back to the embassy. Tried to get out 4 times by the evening of 16 August but armed Taliban were present everywhere. The airport is 15 km from the embassy. In the end we decided that what will happen will be seen.
At 10.30 pm again all left for the airbase. He heaved a sigh of relief when the gunmen reached the airbase while dodging the Taliban at 3.30 pm. Our C-17 aircraft took off at 5.30 am and landed in Gujarat at 11.15 am. We were warmly welcomed there. Then we were taken to Hindon airbase. No one slept or ate anything during the entire 56 hours.
