Islamabad: The lawyer before a Pakistani court has requested not to trust Azam Khan’s testimony. This case is related to jailed former Prime Minister Imran Khan. Khan’s lawyer requested the Islamabad High Court not to rely on the testimony of his (Khan’s) former aide Azam Khan in the confidential diplomatic documents leak case (Cipher case) as it (testimony) was clearly recorded under suspicious circumstances. Was done.
Advocate Salman Safdar, appearing for Khan, on Tuesday argued before a division bench of Islamabad High Court (IHC) Chief Justice Amir Farooq and Justice Miangul Hasan Aurangzeb that Khan’s confidant, once the founder of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), Azam Khan is an accused in this case and went missing in June 2023. Then, instead of recording his confession, Imran Khan’s former principal secretary testified against him before an investigating officer and magistrate. The High Court on Tuesday was hearing the appeals of 71-year-old Khan and former Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi against their trial under the Official Secrets Act, 1923 for leaking confidential documents, Dawn News reported. The punishment awarded has been challenged.

Advocate Safdar said the FIR in the case was registered on August 15 last year and Khan had recorded his statement the next day. The IHC perused the records and found that Azam Khan had gone missing on June 15 and resurfaced on July 20 and recorded his statement a month later. Safdar cast doubt on the former bureaucrat’s testimony and argued that it was recorded under suspicious circumstances. He urged the court not to trust Azam Khan’s testimony and argued that the magistrate recorded his (Azam Khan’s) statement without issuing prior notice to the other accused. (Language)
