Supreme Court.
New Delhi: If not in reality, then at least in films, almost all of you must have seen lawyers arguing in the court at some time or the other. Whatever the season, whatever the time, whoever the lawyer is, he has to wear a black coat or gown while arguing in the court. It is still fine in other seasons, but in summers, these black clothes cause a lot of trouble to the lawyers. This is the reason why now a petition has been filed in the Supreme Court requesting exemption from this special dress code.
There is also an appeal to determine the main months of summer
According to reports, the petition filed in the Supreme Court has requested that lawyers be exempted from wearing black coats and gowns in the apex court as well as high courts across the country during summer. The petition filed by advocate Shailendra Mani Tripathi has also requested to direct the Bar Council of various states to determine the ‘key months of summer’ for each state so that lawyers can be exempted from wearing black coats and gowns in those months.
Citing health related issues
The petition has requested the Supreme Court to consider relaxing the traditional ‘dress code’ for advocates in the states as it may cause health issues during the rising heat. The Supreme Court had refused to consider a petition seeking exemption for lawyers from wearing black coats and gowns in the apex court as well as high courts across the country during summer in 2022. The apex court had said that it cannot consider the petition under Article 32 and asked the petitioner to approach the Bar Council of India (BCI) with his grievance.
