Expressing his faith in the Council of Ministers, Chandrashekhar said that I am deeply saddened that many of our friends have been shocked by the non-formation of the cabinet. He wishes to see all the members of the cabinet as soon as possible. The habit of seeing the pictures of the ministers has become so bad that without seeing them, they find the Parliament meaningless. Some MPs have raised their voice that we do not have a majority in the Parliament. I did not want to give him any opportunity to expand the cabinet on a large scale without his consent or without the consent of the Parliament.
The only reason for this was that after gaining the confidence of the Parliament, the cabinet would be expanded immediately. Taking a jibe at such members, he said that there is a special kind of bird which cannot see anything in the sunlight. It is not the fault of the sunlight, it is the fault of the bird’s eye. Chandrasekhar said that I do not want to accuse anyone and do not want to give any long wide speech at this time. Chandrashekhar said that we took the support of the people of Congress and I have no qualms in doing so. I have taken support and I want the same support from my friends who are saying shame-shame today. It is not a question of one person’s pride. Many times slogans are raised that who is the Prime Minister? Today you do not know yet, in a few days it will be known who the Prime Minister is, it will be known more clearly.
I want to tell those people that one day Advani ji was a god for you to save this country and today Advani ji has become a demon for you. So this politics is yours, not mine. Today, the people of the leftist party who think that they have got the right to give certificates – call them progressive, call them reactionary. I don’t want any certificate from him. I would like to say this with great humility that I have also spent some time in the politics of this country. I have seen these bravehearts very closely. Before saying anything to me, put your hand on your heart and think to all the leftist leaders, especially those leftist leaders who have worked in the national movement. I respect those who have a history behind them because of that history and even today I understand that they probably do not have knowledge of the circumstances.
VP Singh’s government rested on two crutches, one BJP and the other leftist. The BJP withdrew support to the government on 23 October 1990 when Lal Krishna Advani was arrested during the Rath Yatra. VP Singh’s government went after losing the trust vote on 7th November. After an eleven-hour debate on the night of 7 November 1990, 142 votes were cast in favor of the VP Singh government and 346 against it. The very next day there was a split in the Janata Dal. Some MPs joined hands with Chandrashekhar who formed a new party called Samajwadi Janata Dal and formed the government with outside support from the Congress.
