Bijapur. A life-size statue of Donda Pedda, the hero of Bijapur area in the Bhumkal rebellion, will be installed on the roadside at Tondapara in Gangalur. For this the people of the village are preparing.
Although a person named Donda Pedda of Pusnar village, 35 km away from here, is not in this world, but after 110 years, the government has remembered him and the officers are now finding out about his descendants. In this regard, officers of Tribal Research and Training Institute from Raipur and Jagdalpur had come in September. These officers were working under the guidance of Shammi Abidi, the director of the institute.
Dr. Rupendra Kavi, Deputy Director of Jagdalpur Institute and Dr. Rajendra Singh, Assistant Director, told that they had gone to Gangalur to know all about Donda Pedda, but then they could not go beyond him. Due to some constraints it was difficult to reach there. In Gangaloor, he discussed this with retired teacher Yama Kavre. Learned many things from him. According to Dr. Kavi and Dr. Singh, information is being collected about the tribal leaders who rose up against the British rule and a book is to be published about such heroes. Information about Unsung Heroes is being collected for this reason.
He said that in 1910 a rebellion started in Bastar against the British rule and this rebellion was done by the tribals. This is known as the Bhukal Rebellion. This rebellion took place in many parts of Bastar and its leaders were also different in different areas. In the Bijapur area, then Donda Pedda of the Muria tribe of Pusnar was leading the Bhumkal rebellion. The British government sentenced five people including Donda to life imprisonment considering them as rebels. There is no information about the other four people in this area. Donda was of tall stature and had a great influence in the area.
Gundadhur’s name at number one
The name of Gundadhur of Netanar village of Jagdalpur block was at the top of the land. The fire of rebellion had spread to Antagarh in Kanker district, Kuakonda in Dantewada district and Konta area of Sukma district. During this, these freedom fighters were given life imprisonment and even hanging. For the first time, the Tribal Department is collecting information about such tribal heroes. The publication of the book will reveal many unsung heroes to a new generation.
Chowk in the name of Rodda
A leader of the Bhumkal rebellion was also Rodda Peda of Gadhmeli village of Kuakonda block of Dantewada district. The research team met their descendants. A lot has been learned about Rodda. Four years ago a chowk has also been built in his name in the village.
