Indore. The court has given a big decision recognizing the rights of women in live-in relationships. Madhya Pradesh High Court in one of its judgment said that a woman who has lived with a man for a long time is entitled to maintenance on separation, even if they are not legally married. According to a report by NDTV, the Madhya Pradesh High Court delivered the verdict while hearing the case of a petitioner who had challenged a trial court’s order requiring him to pay a monthly allowance of Rs 1,500 to a woman whose He was in a live-in relationship with her.
The High Court emphasized that alimony cannot be denied if there is a “relationship” between the couple. According to the findings of the trial court, both the man and woman were living as husband and wife.

Why is the High Court’s decision important?
The court further ruled that the birth of a child during the relationship strengthened the woman’s right to monthly maintenance. This important decision of the Madhya Pradesh High Court shows the importance of the legal aspect regarding live-in relationships in India. In February this year, Uttarakhand brought in a Uniform Civil Code, one section of which made registration of live-in relationships mandatory.
Earlier, Allahabad High Court had said in a case that it is difficult for women to live alone after a breakup in a live-in relationship. Actually, this case was related to false promise of marriage and rape, on which the bail plea of the accused person was heard in February 2024.
In this case, Justice Siddharth’s bench said, ‘It is difficult for a woman to live alone after the break of a live-in relationship. Indian society at large does not accept such relationships, hence, the woman is left with no option but to file a First Information Report against her live-in partner, like in the present case.
