The Supreme Court started its first special Lok Adalat from today. Through this Lok Adalat, the Supreme Court is trying to expedite the hearing of all the cases pending in the Supreme Court. Lok Adalats will run daily from today till August 3. Chief Justice DY Chandrachud has shared his experience on this.

Chief Justice told his experiences

Giving information on this today, Chief Justice Chandrachud said, “Lok Adalat is being organized by 7 benches of the Supreme Court throughout this week. Our experience today was that it was a great success. Lok Adalat has the support of the Bar, Supreme Court judges, and extensive ground work has been done by the High Courts, State Governments and insurance companies. Its purpose is to settle small cases. People do not realize how small cases come to the Supreme Court, so we have chosen cases like service disputes, labour disputes, land acquisition cases, motor accident claim cases, cheque dishonour cases.

hoped to be institutionalised

He further added that the presence of Bar members as part of the Lok Adalat panel along with the Judges has sent the right message across the society that we are united in our efforts to do justice, especially to the citizens involved in these petty cases. I hope that with this Lok Adalat this will now get institutionalised in the Supreme Court in future.”

What is the purpose of Lok Adalat?

The aim of this special Lok Adalat of the Supreme Court is to reduce the number of pending cases before the Supreme Court. The Lok Adalat will be held from July 29 to August 3. The Lok Adalat will be held after 2 pm every day and will consist of two Supreme Court judges, a senior advocate and an advocate-on-record to hear the case.
