Party Status in Madhya Pradesh Assembly – BJP – 127, Congress 96, BSP – two, SP – one other 4.
Madhya Pradesh Assembly: State Bureau, Bhopal. The post of Deputy Speaker in Madhya Pradesh Legislative Assembly has been lying vacant for two years. After the fall of Kamal Nath government, the process of election for the post of Deputy Speaker has not been done. Actually, both the BJP and the Congress are in a dilemma regarding the post of the party’s vice-president. Earlier it was a tradition that usually the post of Vice President has been given to the opposition. But after the assembly elections held in 2018, the Kamal Nath government broke this tradition. Due to which now BJP also does not want to give this post to the opposition. Here the Congress hopes that the government will follow the tradition by giving this post to the opposition.
The controversy over the post of Deputy Speaker started in 2019, when the BJP, being in the opposition, had elected Vijay Shah for the post of Speaker of the Assembly. For this reason, Congress had made Hina Kavre the vice-president of the party, instead of giving it to the main opposition party as per the convention of the vice-president. Circumstances changed and BJP came to power.
A demand was also made by the Congress to give the post of vice-president to the opposition, but a decision was not taken regarding this. On the other hand, the BJP is preparing to conduct the election of the vice-president in the session starting from March 7. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Dr. Narottam Mishra made it clear that we will follow the tradition started by Congress.
The post of Vice President will remain with us. On the other hand, the Assembly Secretariat has proposed to the government that until the election of the Deputy Speaker is done, the Speaker should be given the right to use the voluntary vote received by the Deputy Speaker. The Vice-President gets a voluntary grant of one crore rupees every year. Congress Chief Whip Dr. Govind Singh says that in the meeting of the Legislature Party, we will decide our strategy for the post of Vice President. If needed, candidates can also field.
