All-time great leg-spinner Shane Warne passed away on Friday (March 4). Warne, who had the ability to spin the ball even on the glass, was included in the year 2000 among the five greatest cricketers of the 20th century. Warne, who threw the ball of the century in 1993, left this world, but he made some such records in cricket which are still standing today.
Warne made his international debut in the Sydney Test (1992) against India, taking just one wicket for 150 runs. However, as his career progressed, his balls troubled the batsmen. In 2006, Warne became the first bowler to take 700 wickets in Test cricket. Apart from this, he also holds the record for most runs without a century. Warne played 145 matches in his Test career. During this 3154 runs were scored. His highest score was 99 runs.
Let us know about some of Warne’s achievements and records:
- In a career spanning over 16 years, Warne took 1,001 wickets in 339 international matches. These include five or more wickets in an innings 38 times and 10 or more wickets in a match 10 times.
- Warne has the most wickets as a leg spinner. He has 708 test wickets to his name. He is second only to Sri Lankan off-spinner Muttiah Muralitharan in terms of taking most wickets in Tests. Muralitharan took 800 wickets.
- Warne is one of only two players in world cricket to have taken more than 1,000 international wickets. The other is Sri Lankan off-spinner Muttiah Muralitharan.
- Warne is the only Australian to touch the 700-wicket mark.
- Warne was also the first bowler to take 600 Test wickets apart from 700. He achieved this feat in 2005 by dismissing England’s Marcus Trescothick.
- Warne is the first captain to win the Indian Premier League (IPL). He made Rajasthan Royals champion in 2008 under his captaincy. Then Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s team defeated Chennai Super Kings in the final.
