The new airport is likely to be commissioned in the year 2023-24, the state cabinet has given the greenfield airport to come up as a PPP project
Mumbai, June 23 (IANS)| The Maharashtra government on Wednesday gave approval to Adani Airport Holdings Limited (AAHL) to operate the Navi Mumbai International Airport in the adjoining Thane-Raigad region. An official gave this information. The state cabinet, chaired by Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray, gave its nod to AAHL for the iconic greenfield airport to come up as a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) project.
Earlier, the airport was to be developed by GVK, which was running the Mumbai International Airport Limited (MIAL). But last year it was taken over by AAHL, and it was approved by Directorate of Civil Aviation, Airports Authority of India, SEBI, CCI and finally CIDCO, which is overseeing the mega-project.
With this, Mumbai, headed by industrial magnate Gautam Adani, has become the largest private airport operator running several major airports such as Navi Mumbai (upcoming), Bengaluru, Ahmedabad and Lucknow, with three more likely to happen in the near future. . AAHL – a wholly owned subsidiary of Adani Enterprises Limited (AEHL) – now has a majority stake in the new airport, with AAL holding a 26 per cent stake.
Navi Mumbai International Airport is being built on 1,160 hectares of land. It is expected to be operational in 2023-2024 and is poised to become the country’s leading airport over the next decade for both domestic and international flights.
