New Delhi. Mamata Banerjee government of Bengal is going to impose Section-144 in Kolkata. Under Section-144 of CrPC, there will be a ban on more than five people standing at one place in Kolkata for the next 60 days from May 28. The government said that reliable information has been received that violent protests are likely to take place in the city, resulting in large-scale disturbance of public peace. The order issued by the Kolkata Police Commissioner said, “The ban on any unlawful assembly of five or more persons will remain in force from May 28 to July 26, 2024 or until further orders.”
BJP targeted PM Narendra Modi over this. BJP’s state unit says that this is being done to stop PM Narendra Modi’s roadshow in Kolkata. Bengal BJP president Sukanta Majumdar said that this is a desperate step to stop PM Modi’s roadshow. “After 5 phases of elections, CM is now scared after sensing the will of the people. She has ordered Kolkata Police to impose Section 144 in the city to stop Modiji’s roadshow.”
Kolkata Police denied the claim of the BJP state president. Attaching a copy of its old order on X, the police wrote, “Kolkata Police issues CrPC Section-144 orders around Dalhousie and Victoria House on a regular basis. This is nothing new and copies of previous orders are being attached. So please refrain from spreading misleading information.”
Acting as an executive magistrate for the Kolkata Metropolitan Region and parts of South 24 Parganas, Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Kumar Goel exercised his powers under Section 144 of the CrPC 973 to prohibit any rallies, meetings, processions or demonstrations to maintain public disturbance.
