New Delhi. The Ministry of AYUSH has tied up with the World Health Organization (WHO) to open a global center for traditional medicine in Jamnagar, Gujarat.
The interim office of this global center will be in the Institute of Ayurveda Training and Research.
The central government will invest $250 million in this global hub. Its main objective is to harness the potential of traditional medicine around the world through modern science and technology and to improve the health status of the whole world.
Vaidya Rajesh Kotecha, Secretary, Ministry of AYUSH and Dr. Tredos Adnam Ghebreyesus, Director General, WHO, signed the agreement in Geneva on 25 March.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that he was happy to know that an agreement has been signed to establish a global center for traditional medicine. He said, “Our government is engaged in making health care affordable to all through several initiatives. The global hub to be set up in Jamnagar will help in providing the best healthcare solutions to the world.
AYUSH Minister Sarbananda Sonowal said that his ministry has been successful in signing this agreement due to the initiative and efforts of the Prime Minister. He said that this center will benefit the system of traditional medicine all over the world.
The Director General of WHO also said that harnessing the potential of traditional medicine with the help of modern science and the principles of sustainability and equality will prove to be transformative for the health sector in the 21st century.
This global center will create an evidence base for policies and for setting standards for traditional medicine and its practice.
