Railways is ‘mapping’ the districts across the country where mining takes place so that they can be connected to the rail network and get a bigger share in freight traffic. Under the ‘Mission Hungary for Cargo’ initiative, the Railways aims to increase its share in the freight sector from the current 27 per cent to 45 per cent.
Under this, the divisions have been instructed to identify the districts and survey the total product of the mines there. Officials said that the ministry has so far approved the survey of 100 MT production capacity of mines across the country. So far 52 districts have been identified. These include Tinsukia, Raiganj, Korba and Dantewada. The products include coal, iron ore and bauxite limestone which the Railways intends to transport at competitive prices.
