A strange incident happened in the first match of the two-Test series being played between India and Sri Lanka. On the second day of the match on Saturday (March 5), captain Rohit Sharma decided to declare India’s innings at 574 for eight. At that time all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja was at the crease after scoring 175 runs. Jadeja missed the first double century of his career due to Rohit’s decision.
After this Rohit Sharma started getting criticized on social media. People compared him with current coach Rahul Dravid. Dravid decided to declare the innings in the Multan Test against Pakistan on 29 March 2004 when Sachin Tendulkar was unbeaten on 194. After the end of the second day’s play, Jadeja revealed why Rohit had declared the innings at that time.
Jadeja said, “I told the team management to declare the innings because the Sri Lankan players were tired at that time. We could have taken advantage of this. We had a great opportunity to get them out.” Jadeja’s guess was accurate. The Sri Lankan players looked uncomfortable in the first innings. They lost their four wickets for 108 runs.
Jadeja also showed amazing in bowling after batting. He dismissed Sri Lankan captain Dimuth Karunaratne. He scored 28 runs. Apart from the captain, Sri Lanka’s Lahiru Thirimanne Ashwin scored 17 runs, Angelo Mathews scored 22 runs, Bumrah and Dhananjay de Silva scored one run.
Jadeja dedicated his century to his brother-in-law during the press conference. He said, “I am dedicating my century to my brother-in-law. He has told me many times that if I score a century next time I should dedicate my century to him.”
Apart from Jadeja, Rishabh Pant scored 96 runs in the first innings for India. Ravichandran Ashwin scored 61, Hanuma Vihari scored 58, Virat Kohli scored 45, Mayank Agarwal scored 29, Shreyas Iyer scored 27 and Mohammed Shami scored 20 not out. Jayant Yadav got out after scoring two runs. Suranga Lakmal, Vishwa Fernando and Embuldeniya took two wickets each for Sri Lanka.
