New Delhi: More than 600 lawyers of the country, including senior lawyer Harish Salve, have written a letter to CJI DY Chandrachud expressing concern over raising questions on the judiciary. The more than 600 lawyers who wrote the letter include senior advocates Harish Salve, Chetan Mittal, Pinky Anand, Hitesh Jain, Manan Kumar Mishra, Adish Aggarwal, Ujjwala Pawar, Uday Holla and Swaroopama Chaturvedi. The letter also expressed concern over pressure from certain groups on the judiciary and efforts to undermine the integrity of the judiciary.
‘This group is adopting pressure tactics’
The lawyers have written this letter expressing serious concern against the actions of a special interest group aimed at undermining the integrity of the judiciary. In a letter written to the CJI, the lawyers have said that this group is adopting pressure tactics to influence judicial decisions, and this is especially happening in cases related to political figures and corruption allegations. It has been said in the letter that these groups make such statements which are not true and they do so for political gains. In their letter, the lawyers have highlighted several such practices, including propagation of false stories about the so-called ‘Golden Age’ of the judiciary.
‘Need to speak against hidden attacks’
According to lawyers, its aim is to discredit the ongoing proceedings and undermine public confidence in the courts. In the letter, senior lawyers of the country including Harish Salve have written that as people who support the law, we feel that the time has come to raise our voice for our courts. He has written that we need to come together. The letter reads that there is a need to speak out against hidden attacks and to guard against these calculated attacks while ensuring that our courts remain as pillars of our democracy.
