You must have also heard these things that mother is God or mother’s touch is the best healing touch for a child. But now science has also accepted this. Even science is surprised by the results of a recent WHO funded study conducted in five countries. There has been a reduction in the mortality rate in newborn children due to the mother’s touch and being close to the mother. Not only this, the ability of children born with low weight to be healthy and gain weight has also been seen to have increased by 25 to 30 percent.
In the information given by Safdarjung Hospital, Delhi, it was said that Kangaroo Mother Care i.e. NNICU has been found to be more beneficial than Neonatal Care Unit i.e. NICU for children born underweight. The neonatal ward of Safdarjung Hospital, India was chosen for the study on whether NICU or MNICU is beneficial for underweight newborns. In which apart from NICU beds and children’s beds for Kangaroo Mother Care, mother’s beds were also installed.
The study found that in critical condition of newborns weighing between 1 kg and 1.8 kg, when their mothers were kept with them 24 hours a day, the chances of recovery of the children increased by 25 to 30 percent. Whereas such effect was not seen on children who were away from contact with their mothers in NICU.
Under the study, in collaboration with the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, the facility of Neonator KMC i.e. Kangaroo Mother Care was provided on 15 beds in Safdarjung Hospital. Hospital’s MS Dr Vandana Talwar and ICMR Director Dr Rajiv Bahl also formally inaugurated the Mother Neonatal ICU at Safdarjung Hospital on 5 August 2023. In which the child’s mother could stay with the child for 24 hours. For this, it was also ensured in Kangaroo Mother Care that the newborn weighing less than 2.5 kg continues to get mother’s milk without any hindrance.
The results that came after 3 months were quite shocking. The children who were with their mother in Kangaroo Mother Care recovered sooner and their recovery percentage was higher. Whereas the death rate was higher in children staying in normal NICU.
This problem occurs due to weight loss
Safdarjung Hospital said that babies born with low weight often have difficulty in breathing or are more likely to suffer from hypothermia, sepsis or infection. For this, to provide immediate relief, newborn babies are kept in Neo Natal Intensive Care Unit where they are treated but they are away from the mother. Whereas in Kangaroo Mother Care, the mother stays with the baby all the time and gives her her touch right from breastfeeding.
Kangaroo mother care beds increased in Safdarjung
Let us tell you that every month 150 to 200 newborn children come to Safdarjung Hospital for treatment after being referred from UP, Haryana, Punjab, Bihar, Rajasthan. In such a situation, the number of beds in NNICU was increased to 40 in the month of January. The effect of which was that in the last three months the mortality rate of newborns came down to only 16 percent whereas earlier the newborn mortality rate was 30 to 40 percent.
