Grandfather was a veteran freedom fighter and educationist
Mukhtar Ansari might have been named after his father Mukhtar Ahmed Ansari so that his son could make a name for himself in national service and education like his father. But this could not happen. You will be surprised to know that the name Mukhtar Ansari was named after his own grandfather who was one of the biggest leaders of the freedom struggle in the country. Mukhtar Ansari’s grandfather Dr. M.A. Ansari was one of the prominent leaders of the independence movement from 1912 to his death in 1936. He received higher medical education and as a humanitarian, he provided medical assistance to the people in Turkey during the Balkan War. In 1898, he participated in the All India Session of the Congress for the first time and within no time his stature grew so much that in 1927 he became the President of the Congress. During his period there was a wave across the country against the Simon Commission.
Founder of Jamia Millia
Dr. M.A. Ansari was among the prominent leaders of Mahatma Gandhi’s non-cooperation movement and civil disobedience movement. He also had to go to jail during the non-cooperation movement. In 1924, when the heat of communalism started increasing in the country, Dr. Ansari was the pillar of Hindu-Muslim unity. He came forward and quelled this flame. Dr. Ansari was an advocate of quality education for Indians. Therefore, he contributed significantly to the foundation of Jamia Millia Islamia in 1920. He was one of the founders of this institute and in 1928 he also became the Chancellor of this institute. It was during his tenure that Jamia Millia Islamia shifted from Aligarh to Delhi in 1935. He remained the Chancellor of Jamia Millia Islamia till his death. Ansari Road in Daryaganj of Old Delhi is named after him while the place where AIIMS is located is also named Ansari Nagar. On the Amrit Mahotsav of Independence, the Government of India had launched a special campaign on his life.

Very few people know that today Rajouri district is a part of our country because of Mukhtar Ansari’s maternal grandfather. A small contingent under the leadership of Brigadier Usman killed a thousand tribals of Pakistan and recaptured Nowshera. When Pakistan attacked Kashmir soon after independence, Brigadier Usman was given the responsibility of liberating Poonch and Jhangar. He took an oath that until this area is freed from Pakistani clutches, he will sleep on the ground like an ordinary soldier. Brigadier Usman remained at the forefront of this battle and started giving orders to the soldiers himself. According to a news in Financial Express, he said such a thing to boost the morale of the army which got recorded in history. He said, “The eyes of the whole world are on us… sooner or later death is sure to come. But what could be better than dying on the battlefield.”
Were martyred after killing one thousand Pakistanis
When the campaign was launched under the leadership of Mohammad Usman to liberate Nowshera of Rajouri, the Indian Army killed one thousand Pakistani tribesmen and many were injured. The Pakistanis ran away from there. Brigadier Usman is called the lion of Nowshera. After this incident, Pakistan placed a reward of Rs 50,000 on Brigadier Usman for the murder of Usman. On the evening of 3 July 1948, when Brigadier Usman was walking in his brigade headquarters, the Pakistani army started shelling. A shell fell near Brigadier Usman and India’s senior most military commander was martyred on the battlefield. Mohammad Usman is considered a symbol of Hindu-Muslim unity because he rejected the post of Pakistan Army Chief offered by Muhammad Jinnah.
