China-backed parties aim to block US grants for Nepal’s infrastructure. The MCC is a US foreign aid agency aimed at combating poverty and Nepal was the first country to qualify for the program. An agreement to this effect was signed in 2017.
Meanwhile, 17 Nepal Police and 7 Armed Police Force soldiers were injured in violent clashes a day earlier against the US grant-in-aid agreement.
However, the Sher Bahadur Deuba-led government has formally opened the doors of Parliament for parliamentary discussion and support to the MCC proposal. But due to the China-US conflict, the Chinese Foreign Ministry is running a campaign against the American project in Nepal.
