The world is aware of the stance of the Afghan Taliban regarding girls’ education in Afghanistan. A new academic session has started in Afghan schools on Wednesday without girls. The Taliban has banned girls’ education from sixth grade onwards. Afghanistan is the only country in the world to ban women’s education. Many countries of the world including the United Nations have expressed concern about this stance of the Afghan Taliban. The Taliban also banned girls’ education during their rule over Afghanistan in the 1990s.
Apologized to women journalists
According to the United Nations Children’s Agency, more than 1 million girls have been affected by the ban. The agency also estimates that 5 million girls had already left school before the Taliban took over due to lack of facilities and other reasons. The Taliban’s education ministry kicked off the new academic year with a ceremony that female journalists were not allowed to attend. The invitation sent to reporters read: “Due to the lack of suitable space for the sisters, we apologize to the female journalists.” Taliban Education Minister Habibullah Aga said during the ceremony that the ministry of “Religious and Modern Sciences Is making every possible effort to increase the quality of education.
Students should avoid doing this
The Taliban is emphasizing on madrassas or religious schools. Due to this, in Afghanistan, importance is being given to Islamic education including basic literacy rather than mathematics or science. The minister also called on students to avoid wearing clothes that are contrary to Islamic and Afghan principles. Taliban Deputy Prime Minister Abdul Salam Hanafi said they were trying to expand education to “all remote areas of the country.” The Taliban had previously said that continuing the girls’ education was against their interpretation of Islamic law, or Sharia, and required certain conditions for their return to school. However, it is not clear what these conditions are and what they are like.
