New Delhi. A team of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) on Monday investigated the building in Mundka, which was hit by fire recently. On May 13, a massive fire broke out in the building in which 27 people lost their lives.
NHRC DIG S. Of. Meena inspected the entire building and later, speaking to media persons, said that they were investigating any (potential) human rights violations there.
The team will also investigate the entire matter.
Earlier on Sunday, the NHRC had taken suo motu cognizance of the incident and issued a notice to the Delhi government asking its chief secretary to submit a report to the commission within two weeks, including action taken against the officials or employees responsible.
The NHRC also observed that the incident of this fire has once again established that the city authorities have learned little from similar incidents in the past highlighting the complete lack of fire safety mechanisms and the gaps in their implementation.
As per the contents of the media reports, it appears to be the worst case of gross violation of human rights of the victims due to complete indifference and utter negligence of statutory duties of public servants in the national capital Delhi leading to loss of valuable lives.
Relevantly, the unfortunate building did not have the required No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the fire department.
Delhi Fire Service chief Atul Garg has said many times that the said building owners never applied for fire NOC.
A Fire NOC certifies that a building is deemed to comply with fire prevention and fire safety requirements as per Rule 33 of the Delhi Fire Service Rules.
