After introducing the BS6 compliant engine in the Indian car market, now the government is continuously emphasizing on the flexible-fuel engine. Recently, Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari has advised car manufacturers to install flexible-fuel engines in vehicles within the next six months. Gadkari said he signed a file on flex-fuel engines advising car manufacturers to manufacture flex-fuel engines for their vehicles.
Let us tell you that Gadkari had reported that the government is looking at issuing an order to introduce flex-fuel engines in India in the next six months, and now he has recently signed a file of flex-fuel engines. In which car manufacturers have been advised to introduce engines that can run on 100% ethanol or petrol. Car makers have been given a period of six months to introduce this technology.
What is Flex-Fuel Engine
A ‘flex-fuel engine’ is an internal combustion engine that can run on more than one type of fuel and mixture. Typically, a mixture of petrol and ethanol or methanol is used in such an engine. Simply understood, Flex is derived from the English word Flexible, which means an engine that can run on other fuel without any problem. At present, most of this engine is being used in Brazil. Talking about India, the fuel for this engine can be made by mixing ethanol and methanol.
Flex-Fuel Vehicles Scope in India
Although the government has issued an advisory, it is not a guarantee that the automakers will be able to meet the deadline. Maruti Suzuki had earlier revealed that they are looking to develop flex-fuel vehicles for India, though the company did not reveal any deadline. Kenichi Ayukawa, Managing Director and CEO, Maruti Suzuki India Limited has already said on the subject, “We have just started the study and it takes time to get it operational.”
