New Delhi. Justice Uday Umesh Lalit has been appointed as the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. He will be the 49th Chief Justice of the country. President Draupadi Murmu has signed off on her appointment. Let us tell you that last week, Justice NV Ramana had recommended the name of UU Lalit for the next CJI to the government. The President has signed the name of UU Lalit, expressing his consent. NV Ramana is retiring on 26 August. Let us tell you that only three months are left for the tenure of UU Lalit. He is going to retire on 8th November.

Let us tell you that Justice UU Lalit has been a witness to many historic decisions. He has also been a member of the five-judge Constitution Bench which gave the verdict on triple talaq. A bench headed by Justice Lalit had empowered the then royal family of Travancore to manage the historic Sri Padmanabhaswamy temple in Kerala. He also gave a verdict regarding skin to skin touch. Justice UU Lalit was among the judges who held that the six-month waiting period prescribed for divorce by mutual consent under Section 13B(2) of the Hindu Marriage Act is not mandatory.

Recently, a bench headed by Justice Lalit sentenced fugitive liquor baron Vijay Mallya to four months’ imprisonment and a fine of Rs 2000 for contempt of court. At present, he is the senior-most among all the judges of the Supreme Court. Considering his past judicial experience, it would not be wrong to say that he will make an invaluable contribution in the direction of reforming the judicial system.
