The State Election Commission in Odisha on Friday announced elections for 109 urban local bodies. The commission said that these elections will be held on March 24 with the adherence to the
COVID-19 protocols. State Election Commissioner AP Padhi said that the counting of votes will be done on March 26.
He said that these elections would be held for 47 municipalities, 59 notified regional councils and Bhubaneswar, Cuttack and Berhampur municipal corporations. Around 41 lakh people will be able to vote for these elections in the state. The Model Code of Conduct has come into force with immediate effect and will remain in force till March 26.
Voters will get NOTA option for the first time
The State Election Commissioner informed that voting for these elections would be held for 1763 wards in municipalities and notified area councils and 168 seats in three municipal corporations. He also said that for the first time voters will get the option of NOTA for the elections of local bodies.
NOTA option is used to reject all the voters standing in a single voter election. Voting on this option means that the voter does not like any of the candidates. Padhi said that these elections to the civic bodies in the state would be done through EVMs (Electronic Voting Machines).
Candidates will be able to get nomination from March 2 to 7
Earlier on Thursday itself, five-phase panchayat elections were held in the state. The State Election Commissioner said that the candidates will be able to get their nominations done between March 2 and 7. Scrutiny of documents will be done on March 9. Apart from this, candidates will be able to withdraw their nomination till March 14.
