In order to increase the supply of onions in the markets, buffer stock is also being released in Lasalgaon and Pimpalgaon wholesale markets of Maharashtra, the Consumer Affairs Ministry said in a statement. So that onion prices do not increase here.
Buffer stock does not increase onion price
Further, the ministry said that the states have been offered onions at Rs 21 per kg at storage locations. Rs 26 per kg including transportation cost has also been supplied to the Safal outlets of Mother Dairy. At the same time, the government said that the buffer stock brings stability to the rising prices of onions.
Onion prices rising slowly
According to ministry data, retail onion prices have been increasing gradually over the past few weeks. Onion was priced at Rs 37 per kg in Delhi and Chennai, Rs 39 per kg in Mumbai and Rs 43 per kg in Kolkata. The ministry further said that the arrivals of late Kharif (summer) onions are stable and expected to remain so from March, 2022 till the arrival of Rabi (winter). Till February 17 this year, the all-India average price of onions was 22.36 per cent lower than last year.
The central government has also urged the states to intervene to control the prices of essential food items. At the same time, it has been said to constitute PSF for intervention at the state level to control the increase in the prices of food items.
Tomato prices fall
In the case of tomato, prices have declined during the last one month, though it has remained slightly above last year’s level. The all-India average price of tomatoes till February 1 was Rs 26.69 per kg, which is lower than the previous month.
