New Delhi. Before the elections, onion may bring tears from the eyes of the public, hence the government has extended the ban on its export till further orders. The Commerce Ministry said in the notification issued on Saturday that the ban on export of onion has been extended till further orders. Its objective is to maintain control over onion prices in the domestic market. It is noteworthy that the government had banned the export of onion till March 31, 2024. Now this ban will remain in effect till further orders.
“The ban on export of onion has been extended till further orders till March 31, 2024,” the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) said in a notification on March 22. DGFT is a branch of the Commerce Ministry, which decides on issues related to exports and imports. Earlier, the government banned the export of onion on December 8, 2023.

How much onion will be produced
Onion production is expected to increase this year. Onion production in Rabi season, 2023 is estimated to be 2.27 crore tonnes. After getting approval from the inter-ministerial group, export of onion to friendly countries is allowed in some special cases. The government has allowed export of 64,400 tonnes of onion to UAE and Bangladesh through National Cooperative Export Limited (NCEL).
Onion sold cheap for months
Earlier, the Center had decided to increase the sale of buffer onion stock at a concessional rate of Rs 25 per kg in retail markets in October 2023 to provide relief to consumers. For this, NAFED was made the nodal agency and onion was delivered to the people at cheap rates through Safal and other government stores.

Most onion goes to Bangladesh
Maximum onion is exported from India to Bangladesh. In the current financial year, from April to January, India has exported onions worth a total of $ 431.7 million. Out of this, onion worth $187 million was exported only to Bangladesh. After this, onions worth $48.1 million were exported to Sri Lanka. Onion export banned from December 2023. But, on the request of Bangladesh and UAE, last month the government had approved export of 50 thousand tonnes of onion for Bangladesh and 14,400 tonnes for UAE.
