Team of doctors performed up to 13 complex surgeries
Prathamesh’s complex surgery lasted 13 hours. This included a large team of Plastic Surgeons, Hand, Microvascular, Orthopedic Department Anesthetologists. Nilesh Satbhai, Head of the Department of Plastic Surgery and Senior Consultant, Global Hospital, said that it was quite challenging. Prathamesh’s left hand was badly damaged. So initially a partial transplant was done on the right side.
Matching blood and HLA important
Dr. Satbhai told that before hand transplant, we match donor and recipient blood group and HLA (Human Leukocyte Antigen). Before the process of transplantation we ensure that the crossmatch of both is negative. He told that Prathamesh is recovering fast. His right hand will start working quickly, while the left hand is expected to take about nine months to fully recover.
